GAME RECAP

The final match of the 2017 Freeport Tournament matched us against the McHenry Warriors, a team we had tied 0-0 in each of the last two years.  Today would be different.

Our boys needed just 11 minutes to gain the lead, and we never looked back.  We scored three more goals before halftime, making it 4-0 at the break.  With a fifth goal in the second half, and a McHenry team that was content to sit back and just defend their own half, we played a patient possession game for much of the second half.

The first goal today was scored by Bryan Guernero, coming from a delicate chip from his brother Gio.  Bryan raced in behind the Warriors backline, onto the ball from his brother, which checked up nicely.  With his first touch, Bryan lifted the ball over the outstretched arms of the McHenry keeper and into the net.

Connor Delahunt would score his 4th goal of the season, this one coming on a corner kick delivery from Michael Blanke.  Delahunt raced into the goalmouth, beating everyone to the ball and hammering it home.

Justin Funk scored a banger of his own just seven minutes later when he took a feed from Colton Wever and curled a ball into the side netting.  His subtle celebration was seen by our guys – he was pleased with the strike, as he should have been!

A minute later, Ethan Lew would score a fantastic goal of his own, this time from the right side.  His one-time finish came from another Gio Guarnero assist.  Lew’s strike was clinical, finding the top left corner on a rope, as he smashed it in.

The last goal of the game came as Connor Delahunt lobbed a ball to the back post and Omkar Prabhavalkar headed it into the back of the net.  It may not have been a piece of spectacular skill like the others today, but we like gritty goals too.

Today’s wins over Waubonsie Valley and McHenry were a much needed response after our loss yesterday.  Well done boys!  Now let’s get back to MSL play on Tuesday and Wednesday against Rolling Meadows and Schaumburg.
